T-Shirts

With AI art generators, you can generate t-shirt designs like never before. When creating t-shirt designs with AI, you must do some after-generation cleanup and upscaling (Adobe, Kittl, and Canva are good for that). AI generators tend to create roughly 1024px-sized images, and t-shirt designs should be in the range of 4K resolution.

To prepare AI art for t-shirts, you should do the following:

  • Upscale the artwork with an image upscaler.
    • You can also use vector AI art generators to vectorize your art or create vector art (which eliminates the need for upscaling).
  • Clean up mistakes, errors, pixel fragments, and colors.
  • Remove the background from the image/artwork and save the image as a PNG file.

If you just want to create t-shirt designs but not sell them yourself, the best way to do it is to prepare the designs and sell them through an Etsy store or some other marketplace like Creative Market or Creative Fabrica.

The problem with AI-generated art is that there’s already so much of it. As AI can push out designs in seconds, the design’s uniqueness and “soul” can suffer a bit. To increase your chances of success, you could build a brand around the art you create with AI.

Patterns

With AI, you can create beautiful patterns to upscale and implement them into various print-on-demand products. While creating seamless patterns with AI can be difficult, it can be done with post-generation fixing.

As the AI market is saturated in many ways, one way to differentiate yourself from the market is to create a brand around seamless patterns.

Stickers

Stickers are among the most sold items (besides t-shirts) on Redbubble and even on Etsy. You can also sell stickers on Artstation to expand your customer base. Creating stickers follows the same process that was outlined for t-shirts. The only difference is that you only need roughly 2800px x 2800px resolution images (instead of 4K and above).

Printify also listed vinyl die-cut stickers as one of the top-selling print-on-demand products in 2023.

Always selling sticker topics:

  • Halloween and ghosts
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas
  • Street and punk culture
  • Anime (especially chibi style)
  • Quotes
  • Skulls
  • Botanic
  • Cats
  • Cute animals and creatures

Posters

Creating posters with AI image generator is one of the easiest things you can do. AI art generators are especially good at generating vertical images, upscaling the generated image is the only extra step you need to take.

If you have access to a catalog of photographs, you can use those and turn them into paintings/posters (oil, abstract, cubism, vintage, etc.) with AI art generators image-to-image function.

You can also offer custom art generation services by using the same image-to-image function.

While Etsy is one of the best marketplaces to sell posters online, you might also want to consider building a brand and driving traffic to your own site. You can use WordPress, Squarespace, or Shopify site and connect that with Printify or Printful to get started with brand building.

Coloring Books

Example images for a coloring book.

Amazon is filled with print-on-demand coloring books. Coloring books have line art based artwork, and currently AI art generators always add a background to the image which can be white but also non-white. This means you need to do some extra background removal and cleaning up mistakes from the AI generated artwork.

While the background removal process can be time consuming, generating a coloring book with the help of AI is still insanely faster than by creating each illustration by hand.

Check out how Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) works and then use an image editing software like Adobe (InDesign) or Canva to create the PDF file needed for KDP.

Popular topics in the coloring book industry:

  • Dark humor and comedy/coloring books for adults
  • Anime
  • Themes suitable for kids and children
    • Dinosaurs, cars, horses, flowers, pirates, unicorns
  • Mandalas
  • Mindfulness
  • Pets (dogs, cats)

Quotes And Text

You can use the free version of ChatGPT to come up with new kinds of quotes and funny sayings that you can then stylize in Adobe or Canva and upload to your print-on-demand store.

Example text prompt for ChatGPT: “write a funny quote that hasn’t been used before. make it as short as possible.”

ChatGPT: “I’m not lazy; I’m just in energy-saving mode!”

While the example image and text were created roughly in four minutes (for example sake), I suggest you take time with your designs. Possibly add some graphical elements to complement the quote or text. A complete design should “speak” to your customer and make them feel like it’s just what they think.

Digital Artist

I’m a digital artist who is passionate about anime and manga art. My true artist journey pretty much started with CTRL+Z. When I experienced that and the limitless color choices and the number of tools I could use with art software, I was sold. Drawing digital anime art is the thing that makes me happy among eating cheeseburgers in between veggie meals.
