Before selling digital products on Artstation, you need to make sure there’s a market for your product. Creating a market that doesn’t want to exist is tough, so ensure you’ve done proper market research before creating your digital product.

Competition research

You can study your competitors by visiting websites that sell the kind of digital products you are selling. Good sites to start with are Design CutsEtsyCreative MarketGumroad DiscoverSkillshare, Udemy, and any other marketplace you can think of that fits what you are selling.

  • File delivery, incl. format, sizes, and features.
  • Customer service.
  • Customer feedback.
  • How many sales the competitor has made.
  • When was the business or store established.
  • Product images and overall branding.
  • Product title and product description.

Audience research

Can your target audience buy your product (financially), and are they willing to buy your product (mentally)? You must ensure the customer and your target audience have the will and the ability to buy your product.

Things to note when doing audience research:

  • What your target audience is looking for.
  • What jobs do they have.
  • What is their income level.
  • Where do they live (country).

Artstation SEO and tags

Artstation has a search bar visitors can use to search for different digital products. Writing a clear product description and optimizing keywords in it will help your product surface in search results.

SEO: Search Engine Optimization

By going into your product’s marketing info tab (available when you’ve given your product basic information), you can set a few categories for your product.

These categories will help your product surface in the correct place when customers are searching for products.

Selecting the right category and writing a clear product description will help your product get organic traffic.

Price Your Product

Depending on the digital product you are selling, you can have different pricing strategies. The usual route is to price roughly the same way your competitors have priced their products, but in most cases, that might not be the best approach.

In Artstation, you can set one flat fee for your digital product. Remember that as digital products are not tangible, the perceived value becomes highly important.

Ways you can increase perceived value:

  • Improve branding and design aesthetics.
  • Raise product price above the average market price.
  • Emphasize the results and the outcomes your customer can get with your product.

Different pricing strategies you can use to price your digital product:

  • Value-based pricing strategy
  • Competition-based pricing strategy
  • Cost-based pricing strategy
  • Brand-based pricing strategy
  • Offer-based pricing strategy

Coupons (available on PRO and STUDIO plans): You can set discount coupons to entice price-sensitive customers to buy your products.

Cross-sell discounts (available on PRO and STUDIO plans): You can sell more products by offering discounts based on the volume of products. You can set a discount if a buyer purchases 2 products or 3+ products in the same order.

Social proof

Example of a customer review.
Customers can see reviews and ratings directly on the product page.

One of the most effective product marketing methods is social proof, customer testimonials, and customer reviews. Nothing beats customer reviews (when they are positive), so try your best to include social proof in your product description.

Artstation has a built-in rating and review system, so people can easily leave a rating and a review for your products.

Different ways to get customer testimonials and social proof for your product:

  • Have a beta group and ensure your customers get results, which you can add as part of your product description.
  • Send a follow-up email after a customer has bought your products and ask for feedback.
  • Have a feedback form or a link to a form to collect customer feedback, don’t forget to ask permission to use their replies as social proof.
  • Offer bonus content in exchange for a review.

Email marketing

Email marketing is one of the best ways to promote your Artstation store, as you can directly reach your customers through their inboxes. There is a reason people have given you their email addresses, and if you’ve done things right, your digital product is aligned with the people on your list.

One of the best email service providers that we can recommend: ConvertKit

Email list-building strategies to use:

  • Squeeze pages
  • Content upgrades and gated content
  • Embedded signup forms
  • Loyalty and referral programs
  • Pop-ups and overlays

Branding and products visual design

Branding and having professional-looking images for your products can increase your sales. Your digital product needs to look good to signal a high perceived value.

Your product can be amazing, but if the packaging, product images, design, use of fonts, and overall branding are off, you likely won’t make any sales.

Below are some of the best sites to get professional resources for stylizing (fonts, mockups, templates, etc.) your digital products:

Offer freebies

Freebies are popular in the Artstation Marketplace, serving as samples to attract followers. When visitors get your digital product (freebie or paid) on ArtStation Marketplace, they follow you automatically, regardless of whether they bought something from you or got a freebie.

Followers get notifications on-site and via email for your new products. Free items help build an audience and keep them informed about upcoming releases.

Artstation Pro and Studio plan

Being an ArtStation Pro and Studio member lets you earn up to 95% from each sale on your ArtStation-powered website. You will earn up to 88% from each sale if you are on the free plan.

Being a pro or a studio plan member, that’s 7% more profit, which can quickly add up when selling in high volume.

Digital Artist

I’m a digital artist who is passionate about anime and manga art. My true artist journey pretty much started with CTRL+Z. When I experienced that and the limitless color choices and the number of tools I could use with art software, I was sold. Drawing digital anime art is the thing that makes me happy among eating cheeseburgers in between veggie meals.
