Overview of Playground AI

Playground AI is one of the top free AI art generators, offering a compelling alternative to Midjourney. With Playground AI, you can access 1,000 images daily and even use the generated images commercially. For enhanced features, upgrading to the Pro version, priced at $15 per month, allows you to generate 2,000 images daily.

Moreover, the Pro version eliminates restrictions on image dimensions, lowering the need for upscaling, and offers unlimited quality and steps. It also boasts faster image generation and a permanent private mode.

While Playground AI may not currently produce the absolute best AI art, it provides an excellent opportunity for aspiring AI artists to progress from beginners to professionals without incurring monthly fees.

Playground AI offers various “Filters,” which can be seen as style guides rather than AI art models. These filters seem to supplement the text prompt by providing additional guidance to the AI art generation process rather than relying solely on an AI art model for image generation.

The user interface of the Playground AI art generator is user-friendly and intuitive, offering a wide range of options similar to those available in locally installed AUTOMATIC1111’s Stable Diffusion WebUI.

Features And User Interface (UI)

Image showing the Playground AI’s user interface.

Playground AI’s user interface is one of the easiest to understand and use. You have your text prompt area and image-to-image selection on the left side. On the right side, you have a prompt guidance scale, number of images to generate, quality and details slider, etc.

One thing to note is that Playground offers (at the time of writing) four different diffusion models to choose from:

  • Playground v1
  • Stable Diffusion 1.5
  • Stable Diffusion 2.0
  • Stable Diffusion XL
  • DALL·E 2

Stable Diffusion XL is the strongest model, while Playground v1 is the weakest. It seems Playground tried to follow in the footsteps of Midjourney and Lexica by creating their own model. However, the results lack quality, so SD XL is the preferred model.

Playground AI only supports the English language on their site and in their customer support.

Playground AI’s strengths

Playground AI has a lot of strengths, even though they lack in model selection.

Below are some of the most notable strengths and features Playground AI has:

  • Massive catalog of different filters/styles to choose from.
  • Ease-of-use and extremely fun-to-use AI art generator.
  • Experimenting with different art styles is easy, fun, and fast.
  • Canvas and how it enables you to do outpainting, inpainting, and correcting images.
  • The service is constantly developed.

Filters and styles

Below are some of the most notable filters and art styles Playground has:

  • Realistic Vision 2
  • RPG 4
  • Counterfeit 3
  • Geometrieva style
  • Deliberate
  • Oil Painting
  • Masterpiece
  • Protogen models

The filters have been named the same way they are found online from model sites like Civitai. Playground AI uses SD VAE ft-EMA. Filters clearly bring similar results as though you would use them as a local checkpoint model install.

Changing filters and art styles feels like the underlying diffusion model would change, but how exactly the AI art generator currently works is not confirmed.

Playground AI’s pricing model.

While you can generate 1,000 images per day, even that might not be enough for some. All plans come with the option to use Playground’s AI images commercially (even though it’s unneeded, as you can use them commercially even without their approval).

The Pro plan, which costs $15, gives you limitless image dimensions, 2,000 images/day, faster image generation, permanent private mode, no limits on quality and details, etc.

The DALL·E 2 add-on is a bit questionable, and I don’t see much of a use case for it. So it comes down to whether you want to create 1,000 or 2,000 images daily and need to upscale directly on Playground.

Pros And Cons

Using the same text prompt brings very different results when you only change the Filter.
Pricing. You can only create 4 images per generation.
User interface and the ease-of-use.Limited model selection.
A vast array of different art style filters.Overall art quality.
Canvas and its outpainting, inpainting, and image correction capabilities.
You can create 1,000 images for free and use them commercially as you like.
You can combine images together to create AI art.
Powerful image editing capabilities.
A table detailing the pros and cons of using Playground AI.

Key Takeaways

  • One of the best free AI art generators.
  • You can create 1,000 images daily and use them commercially as you like.
  • While the overall art quality lacks a bit, Playground AI is fun and easy to use.
  • Beginner-friendly AI art generator.
  • You can only create four images at a time, which is a bit of a downside.

My Experience

“I’ve been playing around (no pun intended) with Playground AI quite a bit, and the thing I like the most is the user interface, fast image generation, and ability to play around and try different art styles on a whim. Canvas is also one of the highlights, as you can do outpainting, inpainting, etc., to further bring your artistic vision alive. What I don’t like is the overall art quality that the art generator produces”.

Digital Artist

I’m a digital artist who is passionate about anime and manga art. My true artist journey pretty much started with CTRL+Z. When I experienced that and the limitless color choices and the number of tools I could use with art software, I was sold. Drawing digital anime art is the thing that makes me happy among eating cheeseburgers in between veggie meals.
